Really wonderful article on Newsweek today describing the decline of music videos (which are only shown in the wee hours of the morning on MTV and VH1) due to the rise of crappy reality TV programs but how one woman with her overly theatrical and wonderful videos may have revived the world of music videos.I Want My Music Videos! The music industry had given up on videos. Then Lady Gaga came calling.
"Many of us keep track of what tops the box-office and iTunes charts, but can anybody even guess what’s the most-viewed YouTube video of all time? No, it doesn’t involve a baby or a kid doing something hilarious. The answer is “Bad Romance,” the music video starring Lady Gaga shimmying in what looks like an underground brothel."
Who wouldve thought that a music video would be the number one most viewed YouTube video? I sure as hell didnt but Im damn glad it is. And whether you love her or hate her youve got to respect what Gaga has done for the music business particularly that of the music video world. Her epic videos are more like mini movies and reminiscent of early Michael Jackson and Madonna. They are anxiously awaited by fans and rewatched dozens of times. And they remind us of the glory days of music videos where the video was as important as the song and when directors would unleash their creative forces in full effect.
At one point I too thought that music videos were dead, but Im glad that thanks to the internet and a 24 year old gal from New York they've been given a second wind.
